Nocturne NR for Photoshop and the shop
Updated
Nocturne NR for Photoshop is a paid plugin, and it follows different rules from Nocturne. Nocturne is free and open source, and it needs nothing from you. A paid licence needs a little: an email address to send your key to, and a record of which computers use the key. This page lists everything the plugin sends and everything the shop keeps, why, and for how long.
Your images are never sent anywhere. Nocturne NR does all its work inside Photoshop on your own computer.
For Nocturne itself and for the rest of this website, see the main privacy page.
What the plugin sends
The plugin contacts this website for two reasons only: to look for new models, and to check your licence if you have bought one. A trial version makes no licence requests.
| Request | When | What is sent |
|---|---|---|
| Model list | When you click to check for new models, or once a day if you turn on Check for new models automatically. That setting is off until you turn it on. | The plugin’s version and your operating system. |
| Model download | Only when you click to download a model. | A request for that model’s file. |
| Activation | When you enter your licence key. | The key, a code that identifies the computer, the computer’s name, Mac or Windows, and the plugin’s version. |
| Licence check | At most once a day, while you are online. | The activation the server gave the plugin, and nothing else. |
| Deactivation | When you remove a computer, in the plugin or on your account page. | The same activation, once. |
Why the plugin identifies your computer
One licence works on up to three computers, so the server needs to tell them apart. Every computer has its own ID number. The plugin turns that number into a code that cannot be turned back into the number, and sends only the code.
The computer’s name is sent so that you can recognise each computer on your account page. Many computers are named after their owner, such as “Anna’s MacBook”. If you would rather not send that, rename the computer before you activate the plugin.
The daily licence check
The daily check lets a licence stop working when it should, for example after a refund or after you remove a computer from your account. Without a connection, the plugin keeps working for 30 days. After that, it needs to connect once to renew the licence.
Your IP address
Your IP address reaches the server with every request. The licence server keeps it for one hour, to stop anyone from guessing keys, and then deletes it. Otherwise it appears only in the ordinary access logs described under This website, which are deleted after two weeks.
Buying the plugin
Payments are handled by Stripe. You enter your card details on Stripe’s own page, so they never reach me or this website. Stripe keeps what it needs for the payment under its own privacy policy.
This website keeps the following:
- Your email address, to send your licence key and any sign-in links you ask for.
- Your licence key, what it unlocks, and whether it is active.
- The payment: the date, the amount, the currency and your country. Your country is needed for VAT. Your name and postal address are not stored.
- Your computers: for each one, its name, whether it is a Mac or Windows, the code described above, when it was activated and when it last checked in.
I email you only when you do something: the licence email after you buy, and a sign-in link when you ask for one. There is no newsletter and no mailing list. Each sign-in link works once and expires after 30 minutes.
The checkout and sign-in pages also record a scrambled form of your IP address for one hour, to limit how often they can be used, and then delete it.
I keep these details for as long as Nocturne NR exists. Your key has to keep working, and you have to be able to sign in to your account page. If you ask me to delete them, I will, and your licence stops working. The payment record is the exception. Swedish bookkeeping law requires me to keep it for seven years.
The shop’s account page sets one cookie when you sign in. It keeps you signed in, holds nothing else, and expires after a day.
